Eligibility Criteria for Cars, Bakkies, Finance in South Africa

Basic Requirements for Bank Finance (South Africa)

1. South African ID

  • A valid South African ID or passport with a valid permit.
     

2. Valid Driver’s License

  • Most banks require a valid driver’s license to approve vehicle finance.
     

3. Proof of Income
You must show that you can afford the monthly installment.
Employed applicants:

  • Latest 3 months payslips

  • 3 months bank statements
     

Self-employed applicants:

  • 6 months bank statements

  • Company registration documents (CK/CIPC)

  • Latest financial statements or accountant letter
     

4. Proof of Residence

  • Not older than 3 months

  • Examples:

    • Utility bill

    • Lease agreement

    • Municipal account
       

5. Good Credit Profile
Banks check your credit record through credit bureaus.
They look at:

  • Payment history

  • Existing debt

  • Credit score

  • Affordability

Even if your credit is not perfect, some dealerships offer rent-to-buy or alternative finance options.
 
6. Deposit (Sometimes Required)

  • Some deals require 0% deposit

  • Others may require 10% – 20% deposit

Example:

  • Car price: R200,000

  • Deposit: R20,000
     

7. Age Requirement

  • Must be 18 years or older.
     

8. Bank Account

  • An active South African bank account where your salary or income is received
     

What Happens After You Apply?
 

  1. Submit your application and documents

  2. Bank does a credit and affordability check

  3. Finance is approved or declined

  4. If approved, you sign the finance agreement

  5. You can collect your vehicle
